Swedish Air Force 100 Years

LINKÖPING, SWEDEN – The Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) marked its centennial anniversary in spectacular fashion during the weekend of 22-23 August 2026, as tens of thousands of aviation enthusiasts gathered at historic Malmen Air Base near Linköping for the highlight of the year-long celebrations. The event, known as Flygdagarna 2026, commemorated 100 years of Swedish military aviation and showcased the past, present, and future of one of Europe’s most respected air arms.

Founded on 1 July 1926, the Swedish Air Force became an independent branch of the Swedish Armed Forces and quickly evolved into one of the world’s most advanced air forces. Throughout the century, Flygvapnet has operated an impressive range of indigenous aircraft, many designed and built by Saab, and has played a crucial role in safeguarding Sweden’s neutrality and, more recently, its NATO commitments.

There could hardly have been a more fitting location for the anniversary event than Malmen. Situated just outside Linköping, the airfield is considered the cradle of Swedish military aviation and was the site where aviation pioneer Carl Cederström established one of Sweden’s earliest flight schools more than a century ago.

A Celebration of Past, Present, and Future

The organizers structured the weekend around the theme“Past, Present and Future”, allowing visitors to experience the full evolution of Swedish military aviation. Historic aircraft shared the spotlight with current frontline assets and cutting-edge technology expected to shape the future of air warfare.

One of the major attractions was the extensive participation of aircraft from the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight. Visitors were treated to flying displays by iconic aircraft such as the Saab B 17, J 29 Tunnan, J 32 Lansen, and the legendary Saab 37 Viggen. Rare vintage aircraft including the Bleriot XI and Ö1 Tummelisa offered a glimpse into aviation’s pioneering days, while formations of historic trainers highlighted the rich training heritage of Flygvapnet.

The modern Swedish Air Force was represented by multiple versions of the Gripen fighter. The advanced JAS 39E Gripen demonstration was among the most anticipated performances of the weekend, showcasing the agility and capabilities of Sweden’s latest combat aircraft. Additional displays featured the JAS 39C in solo and formation demonstrations, underlining the backbone of Sweden’s current air defense capability.

Strong International Participation

The centennial celebration also attracted an exceptional lineup of international participants. Among the headline acts were the Italian Air Force’s world-famous Frecce Tricolori, the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows, Finland’s Midnight Hawks, and solo demonstrations by the French Air Force’s Rafale and the RAF’s Eurofighter Typhoon. Their participation highlighted Sweden’s growing international military cooperation and the strong ties between European air forces.

Historic aviation enthusiasts were equally rewarded, with appearances by classic aircraft such as the Spitfire, Mustang, MiG-15, and F-86 Sabre. The juxtaposition of these legendary warbirds with modern fighters illustrated a century of rapid technological development.

More Than Just an Airshow

Beyond the flying displays, visitors could explore extensive static exhibitions featuring aircraft, helicopters, military equipment, recruitment areas, and displays from both military and civilian organizations responsible for Sweden’s defense and security. Personnel from across the Swedish Armed Forces were on hand to engage with the public, offering insights into their roles and the challenges of modern defense operations.

The event was free of charge and designed as a family-friendly celebration, attracting aviation enthusiasts, veterans, service personnel, and families from across Sweden and abroad. Shuttle services from central Linköping helped manage the large crowds expected for what became one of the country’s biggest aviation events in recent years.

Looking Forward

While the weekend celebrated Flygvapnet’s remarkable history, it also looked ahead to the future. Alongside contemporary aircraft, organizers highlighted emerging technologies, including unmanned systems, future air combat capabilities, and the continued evolution of Sweden’s defense industry.

As the final Gripen demonstration concluded over Malmen on Sunday afternoon, the event served as a reminder of how far the Swedish Air Force has come since its establishment in 1926. From fragile biplanes to advanced multi-role fighters, Flygvapnet’s first century has been one of innovation, resilience, and excellence.

The 100th Anniversary Airshow at Linköping was not only a celebration of Sweden’s aviation heritage but also a confident statement about the future of Swedish air power in an increasingly complex security environment.
