Michigan ANG A-10s Stage Through Lakenheath on Middle East Deployment
RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom — Aircraft from the Michigan Air National Guard made a notable stopover at RAF Lakenheath as part of a transatlantic deployment to the Middle East, reinforcing the United States’ regional airpower presence.
A total of 12 Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, operated by the 107th Fighter Squadron — also known as the “Red Devils” — staged through the Suffolk base while en route from Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
The deployment is part of a broader effort to enhance U.S. military presence in the Middle East, amid ongoing regional tensions. The A-10, renowned for its close air support capabilities and battlefield survivability, remains a critical asset for ground-force support and deterrence operations.
RAF Lakenheath, a key hub for U.S. Air Forces in Europe, frequently serves as a forward staging location for deployments crossing the Atlantic. The arrival of the Michigan-based A-10s drew attention from aviation enthusiasts and local observers, as the distinctive aircraft and unit markings — including the iconic “Red Devils” insignia — were clearly visible during their brief stay.
Following refueling and crew rest, the aircraft continued their journey toward operational bases in the Middle East, where they will contribute to stability operations and allied assurance missions.
This movement underscores the rapid global mobility of U.S. airpower and the continued relevance of the A-10 platform in modern conflict environments.
