Italian Air Force P-72A Argo Weekend Visit to Amsterdam Schiphol

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport welcomed an Italian Air Force P-72A Argo maritime patrol aircraft on Friday, 2 October 2026. Carrying the code 41-03, the aircraft remained at the airport over the weekend before departing on Sunday, 4 October, for its return to Italy.

Although its outline is familiar to anyone who has seen an ATR airliner, the P-72A serves a very different purpose. Based on the ATR 72-600, it has been adapted by Leonardo for maritime patrol, surveillance and reconnaissance duties.

Its military configuration includes specialised sensors and mission equipment, with external fairings and antennas distinguishing it from the civilian passenger version. These systems support the aircraft’s role in monitoring maritime activity and gathering information over coastal waters and open sea.

During its stay at Schiphol, GMAP photographed the aircraft on the apron. The images offer a close look at its dark grey finish and distinctive surveillance equipment—a contrasting appearance to the commercial aircraft normally associated with the airport.

The purpose of the visit has not been confirmed.
