Back in 2009 we learned that the main runway of one of the most interesting air bases in Japan would be out of service: JASDF Hykuri’s runway 03R-21L would be closed for maintenance. The closure of 03R-21L would mean that all aircraft would use the newly constructed runway 03L-21R. This new runway lies very close to the base fence and is ideal for photography. At the time, JASDF Hyakuri was home to 302 Hikotai flying the F-4EJ, 501 Hikotai flying the RF-4E and 305 Hikotai flying the F-15J/DJ. All units also operated a few T-4 trainers. After learning of the runway closure we decided to schedule a visit to Hyakuri to enjoy the even better photo opportunities on this already very photo friendly airbase. This worked out very well and we spent two good days at Hyakuri Air Base. We managed to visit all the photo spots around the base, all shots were taken from outside the fence.
With excellent flying and excellent photo spots this was our best Phantom experience ever!
